Martim Afonso de Sousa, when disembarking in 1531, baptized this island of "Tynharéa", that the bahian people transformed into Island of "Tinharé".

The Tinharé Island is situated to the north of the archipelago of the Bay of "Camamu", south of the state of Bahia, known region as "Tabuleiro Valenciano" (Valencian Tray), or Coast of the "Dendê". Because of its privileged geographic localization, it was scene of innumerable attacks of French and Dutch squadrons, true zone of privateers and pirates during the colonial period.

Under the jurisdiction of the captainship of "São Jorge dos Ilhéus", "Jorge de Figueiredo Correa" received the property from "D.João III" e assigned "Francisco Romero" for the colonization of lands. The constant attacks of the indians" aimorés" and "tupiniquins" to the continental population of the region they had favored the fast population of the islands and, in 1535, it was born in the north of the island the village "Morro de São Paulo".

Morro de São Paulo protected the call "false entrance of Baía de Todos os Santos", strategical entrance for the Canal of Itaparica until the Fort of Saint Antonio (current "Farol da Barra"). The "canal de Tinharé" was essential in the draining of the production of the main centers for the supplying of the Salvador City. The geographic importance of the island during the colonial period justifies the historical monument wealth, that today they are protected by the "Patrimônio Histórico Nacional" (National Historic Patrimony).
